2010 Census Corrections

Postby demographia » Mon Aug 01, 2011 9:02 am

I note that the Missouri Census Data Center does not show a correction on the San Diego & Coronado population, as indicated by the Census Bureau. The link below indicates that 5,875 people were wrongly coded in San Diego and should have been in Coronado..

There is also a correction to the Norfolk information, but it does not appear to impact the total population (miscoding of block data within the jurisdiction).

Also a Washington correction... (Everett)

Just for information ---> in the last census, the Bureau made corrections to urbanized area data within a few months of issuance. The most important (of perhaps 3 or 4 cases) was the combining of the San Rafael and San Francisco urbanized areas. Yet, American Fact Finder and some other Census resources never made the correction. As of this morning, both are shown separate on the 2000 census and a number of analysts have used the incorrect figures through the years.

We thank Wendell for bringing these errors to our attention. We have looked for (and still not found) the location within the pl94 portion of the Bureau web site referencing these error notes. If anyone knows of other similar links let us know.
We have created a web page at http://mcdc.missouri.edu/census2010/errata_2010.shtml that basically just contains what was in this posting. We have also provided links to this page within our data archive in all 2010 data directories (pl942010, sf12010, sf12010x and dpo2010).

Note that while these errors were posted by the redistricting folks as part of the Public Law 94 (aka "redistricting") data files, they affect all 2010 products. Even though the error may have been found in March of 2011 and SF2 will not be released until the middle of 2012, the same error can be expected to persist through all 2010 data products. It's just the way the Bureau does it. The same incorrect pop counts for San Diego and Coronado can be found in the Summary File 1 data sets. And, of course, it is not just the total pop counts that are wrong. All the tables are effected when over 5,000 people are tabulated in the wrong jurisdiction. It's a rather slight error for San Diego but it really messes up the data for Coronado.
