Are the sf32000x data all we have at the tract level?

Postby johnson » Mon Sep 13, 2010 10:34 am

Does this list of variables in sf32000x.ustracts represent all of the tract-level information that is available? I don't see a variable about a rate of male unemployment in each tract, for example. Nor do I see a field that tells me how many people in each tract are living below 150% of the federal poverty level. I see a field showing how many people are living below 185% of the poverty level ("PctUnder185Poor"), but I don't see other cut points. Is that because other cutpoints aren't available at the tract level? Or am I just not looking in the right place?

No. The sf32000x data sets are distillations of the much more detailed data available on the complete Summary File 3 table files (stored in the sf32000 filetype/data directory in our archive). There are also other summary files (sf1, sf2 and sf4) that have tract level summary data. When looking for more detailed data I would start by selecting the sf32000 filetype from the uexplore home page. The data sets we used to derive the sf32000x.ustracts data set are stored in the xxtrbgs subdirectory of sf32000 - http://mcdc2.missouri.edu/cgi-bin/uexplore?/pub/data/sf32000/xxtrbgs . We do not have a single ustracts data set with the complete tables -- it would be too big to process efficiently. What we have is a collection of 51 state data sets, each containing data at the census tract and block group summary levels. These data sets have only the P and H tables, not the PCT and HCT (even more detailed) tables. But those are available via American FactFinder (Missouri pct and hct tables are available in our archive) . As are the SF1, SF2 and SF4 tables. If you are looking for a very specific tabulation involving a cross-tabulation of categories (for example, Poverty Status by Age and Race) then you might want to use the AFF Select Tables screen with the ability to search by Subject and keyword(s). For volume extracts you may find that uexplore/dexter is easier to use once you know what tables you need.
